Native to tropical Asia, star fruit, or "carambola"
as known in Brazil, was introduced to Pernambuco
State in the Northeast of Brazil in 1817,
from where it was spreaded along the whole
Brazilian coast. It is very rich in mineral
salts, vitamin A, C, and B complex. It is
also a natural source of oxalic acid. The
fruits, when cut in transverse section, has
the shape of a perfet five point star. That
is why the name as "star fruit"
was given in the rest of the world.
Uses
The pulp can be used in the preparation of
juice, ice cream, wine, liqueur or sweets.
